Mackie FRS 1700 Power Amps Review

Mackie FRS 1700 Power Amp In addition to its 1660 maximum watts of power in bridged monaural operation, the FRS 1700 can produce up to 830 watts per channel in stereo mode, when driving a pair of 2 ohm speakers. Thanks to its integrated Fast Recovery technology, occasional clipping is no problem for the FRS 1700. Most conventional power amplifiers can become locked into a clipping state when overloaded by input levels that are too high, causing distortion. The FRS 1700 can quickly recover when clipping occurs, saving the ears of your audience and protecting the investment you have made in your speakers.

Along with Fast Recovery, the FRS 1700 features an automatic limiting circuit which can be enabled or disabled via a switch located at the rear of the unit. When enabled, the limiting circuit automatically detects the clipped waveforms that can result from transient attacks (a bass pop, for example), transparently reducing the volume of those attacks while maintaining the overall volume levels needed to power your sound to the back rows of any concert hall. The FRS 1700 additionally has a user selectable 30 Hz high pass filter, which attenuates all frequencies below 30 Hz when enabled. Although the FRS 1700 has more than enough power to drive a subwoofer, this filter ensures that main speakers can be used without risk of damage due to subsonic frequencies.

Power amplifiers can be notoriously heavy. In Mackie's own FR line of power amplifiers, for example, the heaviest unit weighs over 56 pounds. New developments in power supply technology have allowed Mackie to reduce the weight of the FRS 1700 to just 21.5 pounds, helping to preserve your health, and that of your hired equipment staff. The FRS 1700 is protected by a three year factory warranty, which can be extended to five years after purchase.

Mackie, among the most popular providers of sound reinforcement equipment worldwide, has quickly made a name for itself in the live sound field with its power amplifiers. Mackie's Fast Recovery (FR) technology has proven so popular that it has since been implemented in a variety of items across Mackie's studio and live sound equipment lines. Mackie FRS 1700 Power Amplifiers contain the same FR technology, backed up by up to 1660 watts of power.
